This is a gallery of miscellaneous shots, including some street photography and rural views. My travel pictures, particularly those of Paris, are in some other galleries on this site. This gallery is not . chosen with any particular objective in mind, although I should perhaps have one, but there are pictures I like, for various reasons.
In December of 2015 I took my second trip to Paris. My first was in 2000, and was only a weekend hop from Germany where I was working with a client. This visit had a tremendous impact on me. What they say about Paris is all true, its beauty, its atmosphere, and its people -- scratch that. What a lot of people say about the French, that they are snooty and abrupt with foreigners, is not true. I found most of the French in Paris to be warm, helpful and a joy to be around.
Anytime is great for a trip to this city, but December is kind of special because the city, particularly, the Champs Elysée, is decked out for Christmas. It's not too cold, although it can be a bit rainy, so the weather is conducive to walking, which is generally the best way to see the city. Bring good shoes and take your time.
These are pictures from my third visit to Paris, in December 2016. My viewpoint was different this time. My first visit was in 2002 and was just a weekend hop-over from Schwelm, Germany, where I was working at the time. My second visit really gave me a chance to drink in the city by foot, and my pictures reflect this. This trip, I was more familiar with the city and its layout, and I think my sense of what Paris is about changed a little. Not sure this is clear, but as I add photos to this collection, maybe my feelings about Paris on this visit will become so.
In December 2015 I shot a series of photographs through a café doorway that opened onto Rue de Steinkerque, one of the streets that goes uphill to the Basilica. It was warm for December, but the street was uncrowded. The existing foot traffic up and down the hill created an interesting dynamic.
My son lives in Chicago so I get up there often, and we do some photo walks occasionally. I find these walks to be very relaxing, and they give me a unique perspective on this ever-changing city.
